An independent primary
The current major parties work together to create election law that protects the two party system from third party and independent competition. Third parties need to work together to fight the two party system. Third parties could work together by co-sponsoring an independent primary in the 2006 elections. It should be held at the end of the official primaries. All registered voters could participate, even if they voted in the official primaries. Voters would be able to vote for one candidate from any party for each office ( including the current major parties ). Of course, this primary would have no official effect on the election. But any third party or independent candidate that is able to attract more votes in this primary than the current major party candidates did in either primary would gain credibility and media coverage and make it more difficult for the current major parties to keep these candidates out of the debates. A strong enough showing in this primary may even convince enough voters that third party and independent candidates could win the election and these voters will finally stop wasting their votes on the current major party candidates ( it is my opinion that voting for current major party candidates that do not represent your interests because they can win is a much greater waste of a vote than voting for a third party candidate that does represent your interests even in they can't win ).
