1. Only the current major parties got enough candidate votes in the previous election to achieve major party status and qualify for a primary
2. Only the curent major parties candidates can win the current election

3. The current major party candidates get the contributions and media coverage
with separate voting for parties and candidates
1. One or more third parties qualify for major party status and/or/one or both of the current major parties loses major party status
4a. Many voters cast votes to establish third parties and increase their options for the next election
2. Third party candidates have equivalent ballot access and the credibility to attract contributions and media coverage.
4b. Third party candidates win some seats in the House and Senate
3. Third party candidates become competitive
